DAY 8:
Destination: Windhoek
Part of the
group
enjoy the morning in Swakopmund at leisure.
Others have booked on a boat trip from the
Walvis Bay Harbour.
In the early afternoon we venture into the
valley of the Swakop River to
visit the Welwitschia Plains
and the aptly named Moon landscape,
before continuing on our trip to
Windhoek, where we book into the
Safari Court Hotel.
Later this evening dinner will be enjoyed in
Joe’s Beerhouse, one of
Windhoek’s most unusual restaurants. |

Today
Dieter took 9 of our group to Walvis Bay for
a "boat trip with a difference", from
the harbour operated by Levo Tours.
A friendly seal (Spottie) and
seven pelicans featured
in what turned out to be a spectacular trip.
First duty before the show was to get rid of the
seals "fish smelling breath". Suzy
didn't much like the seals attention. |
|
Ann S accepted his advances by allowing
him to do a lap dance! (see top photo). A number
of Pelicans landed next to the boat on the
Skippers command whistle! The
trip was rounded off with some Namibian Coffee
(see comment below). Passengers also witnessed
the
rescue of a canoeist in trouble. (below left).

Carol was told to visit Cafe Anton
whilst in Swakopmund and enjoyed coffee &
pastries there. Then it was time to do a bit
of shopping for presents for the family.
Most of what we found was produced in South
Africa! Did find some hand painted T shirts
for the grand-kids though. Carol also asked
at several shops about the
Namibian coffee she had
heard about. (it would make good gifts for
her family). No-one seemed to know about it,
so she asked Dieter on his return from
Walvis Bay. Guess what? Namibian coffee
isn't coffee, but "OBIES" - Old Brown
Sherry. |

|
|
On our "walk-about" Swakopmund we came
upon June, who was
reminiscing about her early days in
Namibia. Then it was back to the hotel
to await the return of the Walvis Bay
visitors, before heading on to Windhoek.
Our cases were packed and ready waiting
as we were. |
|
|
|
it was time to head out again on the
final leg of our journey. First stop was
the
Welwitschia Plains
and the aptly named Moon
landscape, |
|
|
|
Weird, peculiar, wonderful, strange,
bizarre, fascinating, and of course, unique,
are the kind of words that are used to
describe the Welwitschia. It
is one of the few things on Earth that can
truly claim to be one of a kind. There
really is nothing like it. Details of this
fascinating plant can be found on:
http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantwxyz/welwitschia.htm
The
Moon landscape
is a totally barren, undulating, rocky
desert which was formed by the valleys of
the Swakop river. Truly
fascinating. |

Our final hotel for the tour was the
Safari Court which the Russian
President had commandeered on the
first night of our tour! We arrived in the
dark, after spending a long day on the road.
A quick shower and we had to be ready again
for dinner. Norman & Ann only
got their luggage delivered to their room 10
minutes before we were due to leave for
dinner, due to some bungle! |
|
|
|
The final night of the tour was upon us and
we arrived at Joe's Beerhouse
with apprehension after hearing so much
about it. Many said that the theme was good,
but the service wasn't. Carol had
anticipated some form of entertainment, drum
beating etc. Maybe it was their night off
(or off night?). John, Anthea & Mark
(business friends of Brian) joined us.
