NAMIBIA 2009
DAY 3: 27th June
Fish River Conservation Area

DAY 3:  Destination: Gondwana Collection - Canon Lodge
We travel south through expansive rocky plains, visiting the unique Quiver Tree forest. Nestled amongst huge dolerite boulders, some stacked so mysteriously that it seems impossible that they were created by natural forces, it awards us with magnificent photographic opportunities.
Caņon Lodge is located in Gondwana Caņon Park, only 20 km from the Fish River Canyon. The 25 en-suite chalets are thatched and built from natural stone. Nestled against massive granite boulders, you will feel that you are living in the lap of nature. Linger at the restaurant and take a closer look at the carefully arranged decoration from the pioneering days of farming. For exploring the park on your own the choice is between horse, four-wheel drive and walking stick. Or just relax with a book on our terrace shaded by trees or at the swimming pool.

What a treat when Dieter stopped and put this huge map on the side of the coach explaining our proposed route.  We traveled vast distances in Namibia - over 3000 kms in the nine days - but what a revelation the Namibian landscape is - something different to see at every turn - including the Quiver Trees in flower.
Ann S taught Ann B how to hug a tree - they pronounced the exercise satisfying . The boulder formation ("giants playground" at the Quiver Tree forest, was interesting.

Brian finally found someone who didn't answer him back - all these 'folk' are made by a couple who live in the Quiver forest and assemble them from recycled parts scavenged from the local dump.  What a refreshing treat for us all.

Canon Lodge - near the Fish River Canyon - Ann and Norman admire the succulent garden, Marie greets the photographer and the two Carols admire the old farm implements on a carriage which has seen better days!

Canon Lodge, part of the Gondwana collection, is built out of natural rock - in awesome settings - Ann B was ready to welcome us into her pad! The chalet on the left was allocated to David, who just loves climbing stairs! It was also quite a walk to the restaurant.

Friends are a special part of our get-aways - and these friendships become more special after each trip.  Life would be boring without the love and warmth shown by very special people.  Trish, Dieter, Norman and Ann enjoy a sundowner - and Ann S loves this prickly succulent - "Must get one of these for our garden!" The photographer asked her to sit on the plant, but she refused, saying she would be a "pain in the butt"

The true traveler is he who goes on foot, and even then, he sits down a lot of the time
