DAY 2:
Destination: Intu Africa - Camelthorn Lodge
Leaving Windhoek, we
travel into the largest sand mass on earth,
the Kalahari Desert. The bushman refer to it
as the “Soul of the World”, an emotive
description for this area! With its deep red
sand dunes and endless grass plains
interspersed with Acacia’s and shrubs, it is
the only form of survival for a vast amount
of specially adapted wildlife.
Camelthorn Lodge is set in a secluded valley
between two red sand dunes, and hidden
amongst ancient Camelthorn trees. All 12
chalets offer air-conditioning and private
en suite showers. A thatched main lounge,
dining area and boma overlook a natural
stone pool. The ambience of this Lodge is
distinctly Bushman, with artefacts and décor
of one of the oldest cultures in the world.
Guests can explore the Kalahari in open 4x4
vehicles, take guided walks with bushman
trackers and trained guides, and relax
around the pool or in the refined lounge
overlooking the waterhole. |

As
we were loading the coach to leave the city, the
Russian Cavalcade went past us.
So absolutely beautiful to escape all this and
wonder at the passing vistas. Brian was
his 'usual' self being the comic and kept us
amused en route to our destination -
Camelthorn Lodge - makes the travelling
seem to go faster when someone is light-hearted! |
|
We
were greeted at Camelthorn Lodge with a
refreshing fruit cocktail - such friendly smiles
- even from Trish who had to walk
quite a way each time to get to her chalet. |
