NAMIBIA 2009
DAY 2: 26th June
Kalahari Desert

DAY 2:  Destination: Intu Africa - Camelthorn Lodge
Leaving Windhoek, we travel into the largest sand mass on earth, the Kalahari Desert. The bushman refer to it as the “Soul of the World”, an emotive description for this area! With its deep red sand dunes and endless grass plains interspersed with Acacia’s and shrubs, it is the only form of survival for a vast amount of specially adapted wildlife.

Camelthorn Lodge is set in a secluded valley between two red sand dunes, and hidden amongst ancient Camelthorn trees. All 12 chalets offer air-conditioning and private en suite showers. A thatched main lounge, dining area and boma overlook a natural stone pool. The ambience of this Lodge is distinctly Bushman, with artefacts and décor of one of the oldest cultures in the world. Guests can explore the Kalahari in open 4x4 vehicles, take guided walks with bushman trackers and trained guides, and relax around the pool or in the refined lounge overlooking the waterhole.

As we were loading the coach to leave the city, the Russian Cavalcade went past us.  So absolutely beautiful to escape all this and wonder at the passing vistas.  Brian was his 'usual' self being the comic and kept us amused en route to our destination - Camelthorn Lodge - makes the travelling seem to go faster when someone is light-hearted!
We were greeted at Camelthorn Lodge with a refreshing fruit cocktail - such friendly smiles - even from Trish who had to walk quite a way each time to get to her chalet.

Norman & Ann from Benoni very quickly adapted to the mainly Cape Town group, making friends with everyone.  The highlight of the trip to Camelthorn was our 'bush drive' (It very nearly became a lowlight!)

What an awesome game drive - the giraffes posed especially for us as did Linda, Suzy and Marita - "Hey we're going on a game drive!"

On entering the lion enclosure things could so very easily have ended with some of us becoming lion fodder, due to one driver getting stuck in soft sand - well these things add to the excitement and make our stories after the trip more special!  The two land rovers were parked - once again - at a ridiculous angle and hey presto - drinks were on the table - life could not be better than this!  It was unseasonably cold, but we all came well prepared.

An African sunset is always something very special followed by an outstanding boma-braai put together by the friendly Camelthorn Lodge staff. Perhaps the low wine stock (only higher priced wines available) should not be mentioned here.

Dieter & Marita chat away during the dinner around the fire, but- we very quickly all went to bed due to the cold. Next morning we were greeted with the water inlet to the water hole being frozen solid. The small trickle at the front was all that could escape.

Our vehicle is shown parked outside the lodge - Carol was pleased with the accommodation - reminds her of good times in the Kruger National Park.  Ann and Norman took part in an outstanding early morning walk with the Bushmen of the area - they thoroughly enjoyed this ---- "Smashing" said Ann!" The Bushmen were pretty frozen on their return to camp.

"The worst thing about being a tourist is having other tourists recognize you as a tourist."
