TRAVELTIME- Previous Outings

NAMIBIA 2009
DAY 7: 1st July
Swakopmund

DAY 7:  Destination: Swakopmund (via Walvis Bay)
After breakfast we travel through the Gaub and Kuiseb Canyons, where after we visit the Vogelfederberg prior to traveling to the quaint coastal town of Swakopmund.
The luxurious four-star Swakopmund Hotel is built in and around the beautifully restored Old Station Building, dating back to 1901. Two restaurants, a swimming pool, tennis courts, cinema, gymnasium, casino and children's game room are part of the numerous amenities.

We met Mousse McGregor in Solitaire- what a character - he bakes 200 kilos of the most delicious apple pie per day in season.  He started at the back of the garage and now has a swanky new bakery.  Definitely worthy of a stop..
Today we travel 360 km, all on gravel again.  Diverse scenery on the road as we past the Gaub and Kuisen Canyons, with "P" and photo stops along the way.

Vogelfederberg in the distance and most people got to doze in the coach and when we opened our eyes it was to find we were very close to Walvis Bay.  Carol commented that the salt pans were ugly. The Flamingos in the bay were only a small contingent of the "hundreds of thousands" who frequented this area 40 years ago. (Brian attested to this, as he attended an army camp which was on this spot at the time).

Big Mama Dune - Sossusvlei

:Lunch was at the Raft Restaurant  - a few of us chose the Bar and the mussel potjie was pronounced great by Ann S and Carol C. Some felt that it might have been better to go to Probst Bakery in Town.  In no time we arrived at our hotel. The Swakopmund Hotel - the old railway station was a super stop.

A view from most rooms - the pool area, is so tranquil and the rooms ever so comfortable.  Dinner tonight was at the Tug Restaurant,  perfect setting with the waves lapping right under the restaurant.

"When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money.
Then take half the clothes and twice the money
