NAMIBIA 2009
DAY 6: 30th June
Southern Namib Desert - Part 2

DAY 6:  Destination: Sossusvlei & Sesriem Canyon
This morning demands an early start. The first rays of sunrise paint the mountains of sand into a variety of apricot, red and orange, contrasted against a crisp blue skyline, enrapting our senses, and awarding us the opportunity to capture this awesome landscape on film and clambering some of the breathtaking dunes to adore the sea of sand from above. Thereafter we visit the Sesriem Canyon, a life sustaining natural phenomenon in the heart of the Namib Desert.

We were woken from our luxurious tents at 05.30am to allow us to have breakfast before making our way to the Sossusvlei Park entrance by 06h30.
The early start rewarded us with spectacular views of the sunrise creating shadows and a variety of autumn colours on the dunes. We travelled 60km into the Park and reached a point where only 4x4 vehicles could proceed.

Vehicles were awaiting our arrival to transport us the final 5km to the dunes. There was an air of anticipation as we moved through the soft sand, and finally we were there!

Big Mama Dune - Sossusvlei

Dieter poured water into a bottle cap to give the birds some refreshment. "Big Mama" dune climbed by Norman, Ann & Brian. The little black dots on the wind swept edge of the dune are people ascending! Click on the picture to enlarge it.

There were many rest stops along the way to the top, but the reward was to summit and experience the 360 degree view.

Time for School. Dieter drew a map in the sand and explained the influence that the currents and winds have on the movement of sand.

On our return journey we stopped at Dead Vlei and "Big Daddy" dune. No climbing this time (One was enough).

A short stop at the Sesriem Canyon saw us arriving back at the Lodge in time for lunch and an afternoon nap. Linda & Suzy spent their "me time" at the pool. What a wonderful experience it was to visit this area and also to spend two days at the Sossusvlei Lodge.

"Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter."
