NAMIBIA 2009
DAY 5: 29th June
Southern Namib Desert

DAY 5:  Destination: Kolmanskop & Sossusvlei
This morning the ghost town of Kolmanskop reminds us of the opulence and decadence of the diamond rush days of the early 1900’s. Now it stands barren to the harsh wind and heat of the unforgiving desert. Thereafter we travel north to our lodge in the Namib Desert, situated in close vicinity to the breathtaking Sossusvlei.

Sossusvlei Lodge is located in the Namib Desert, at the entrance gate to the famous Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon, surrounded by endless sand dunes and multi-coloured mountain ranges. Guests can enjoy a drink around the swimming pool or in the cosy bar, while superb cuisine is offered in the uniquely painted restaurant or on the terrace. Activities include guided excursions, walking trails, nature drives, hot-air ballooning and scenic flights.

The gates of Kolmanskuppe awaited us early today - our private tour has been scheduled for 8h00.  What a knowledgeable young guy took us around the hall where shows were held, the dining room with individual 'bells' to pull for service, the ice factory, butcher shop etc and then we were invited to take our own stroll around the houses. You hear about Kolmanskop but until you have seen it you just don't realise what a special place it is.
These grand old mansions probably can tell many a tale of the grand old life - times when the lady of the house would be collected in all her finery to go downtown to do her shopping in the local 'train'. Yes there are resident ghosts as well!

Here Carol takes a walk up the stairs covered with sand - the views from the windows seem so desolate at times.  Ann B found it difficult to oblige and be 'hung' up on the meat hooks in the butcher room!

Our stop at the wild horses was so great - we had tried the day before but they were 'way in the distance'.  On this day they were all lying right in front of us - something Dieter says they only do when they are absolutely certain that no danger exists - the visitors view point seems 'under siege' by these horses who apparently gnaw at the wood.

Times away are so great to sit and ponder on life - as Ann B is doing en route to our next stop and where David K takes a moment to reflect on the Namib Garage Restaurant and Take Away in Aus where we were charged N$32 for an ice cream, which back in SA would not be more than R15! (The owner told me he had two daughters to put through university).

The absolute beauty of this desert proves itself time and time again!  A huge tree with communal weavers nests. Dieter says that the last time he was here, there was a snake lying waiting it's chances.  Also this stunning flower on a cactus - beauty au natural!  The gates of Sossusvlei Lodge were very welcoming after our long drive.

The cool colours created a mystic aire and the sculptured gardens were meticulous. We arrived as the sun set and after acquainting ourselves with the surroundings and unpacking, we met in the bar for a drink before tucking in to the buffet.

It was early to bed to ensure we could breakfast at 6am and depart for Sossusvlei in time for the 6.30am opening of the Park.
