SPRING FLOWERS 11
26th -30th August 11

Day 4: Monday 29th August - Ramskop Botanical Gardens in Clanwilliam

Destination Clanwilliam flower show

Checkout time at Swiss Villa; time to pack our goods and start the long drive home, with an overnight stop at Piekenierskloof Lodge. There really are no shops in Nieuwoudtville to talk about, however a local resident has converted part of her home into a shop (Blik Bazaar) to help fund her daughter's tertiary education. We made a brief stop on our way out.

The product shows where the name came from. Not very much of interest though some purchases were made.

Arriving in Clanwilliam we set out to view their annual wild flower show in the church. Although many of the live displays were watered regularly, they seemed to be "tired". Perhaps this is my own view, following the great displays we saw on our travels.

We met for a light lunch at Nanc'y's Tea Room before setting out to the local Ramskop Nature Reserve.

Had we seen this display before Hantam, we would have enthused. There were some colourful items though.

The Rooibos Tea factory is always a must and many leave there laden with product. Gillie looking colourful in her flower embroidered shirt. Last stop was Strassberger's Leather shop, before starting our short trip to Citrusdal where we stop for the night.

The Piekenierskloof Lodge chalets welcomed us. It was a pity that alterations prevented us from going into the old bar / lounge and deck area. Twenty new hotel rooms are being added.

The pool area was unaffected (heated and cold) and the new conference centre was operational and was our venue for dinner.

We were the only guests for dinner and whilst the prawns looked great, some of them were overcooked. Main course was lamb & oxtail

Day 5: Homeward bound via Riebeek Kasteel

Breakfast a thing of the past and we are packing to start the final leg of our journey. Our champion shopper was standing ready to find space for all her goodies.
We were lucky enough to drive through the road construction stoppages un-deterred on our way out, but in bound we had a 20 minute wait.

It did give us a chance to look at the fantastic view and to talk to the road gang manning the "stop - go" traffic signals. They have been busy for 12 months now, and it would appear that they have as long to completion.

Riekeek Kasteel was our destination for lunch and we stopped at Allesverloren Estate for wine tasting and purchase of their famous Port. The view on entering Riebeek Kasteel is colourful.

Brian took exception to the restaurant (Café Felix) management putting a sign on the table which reflected a "Ladies Lunch" and decide to sit on his own.

The chosen lunch was a refreshing way to celebrate our success in flower viewing, fun and friendship over the past 5 days. Thank you all for a fantastic tour.

The flowers of late winter and early spring occupy places in our hearts well out of proportion to their size.  ~Gertrude S. Wister
