Day 3: Sunday 28th August - Mad Hatters Tea Party?

Destination Papkuilsfontein Farm

Our first stop en route to our 10am tour at Papkuilsfontein was Matjiefontein Farm which provided a bit of retail therapy for our passengers. They also have a small dining room for lunches. Carol has stopped here for lunch on the previous trip. It was a short drive from here to Papkuilsfontein.

Whilst waiting for Willem to arrive to host our tour, we adorned ourselves with the various hats in the restaurant. The main photo above shows some of the participants.

We boarded  two 4x4 vehicles and headed out into the farmlands and were immediately captivated by the vast spread of flowers. Diana becomes part of the beauty.

Willem is a 4th generation farmer at Papkuilsfontein. He provided detailed history about the buildings on the farm, before we parked the vehicles and took a short walk to view a waterfall.

The waterfall and gorge provided the backdrop for some excellent photos (not flowers this time).

Brian & Alan sit precariously on the edge, conscious of the long drop to the valley floor in front of them.

Dawn adopts the pose of a reporter taking notes for publication in a newspaper, whilst others enjoy the peace, view and solitude.

We headed back to the restaurant for a lunch break prior to Willem taking us into another area on the farm which displayed masses of smaller flowers. The lamb pie was the choice of many in our group.

Comfortably transported in the back of the Land rover and eager to get out to take photos of the spectacle.

Close up shots of a couple of specimens. You could lose yourself in the multitude of flowers and bulbs. It is a known fact that there are upwards of 15,000 bulbs in an area of one square meter x 20 cm deep. Unbelievable!

Having enjoyed our stay at Papkuilsfontein we headed out on the Loeriesfontein road to visit the Quiver tree forest before sunset. This also proved to be a hit with everyone. Hug a tree day? Dinner was once again at Swiss Villa and after a busy day, it wasn't long before everyone elected for an early night.
