Monday 27th August |
We take our leave of the city
and head to the
West Coast
National Park, timing
our arrival by 11h30. To view
the Spring Flowers you will
learn you have to be in the
fields between 11h00 and 15h00
and stand with your back to the
sun so you can view the flowers
at their very best – opening
towards the sun!
|
|
Lunch will be a picnic in the park
before we go into
Posberg
at around 12h30 – this reserve is only
open in the Flower Season and never
disappoints! After spending a few hours
viewing the flowers and the game in this
part of the reserve, you will find added
pleasure of viewing Langebaan from the
top of the hill in Posberg. We will
visit the
Geelbek Restaurant for coffee
before exiting the park via Langebaan. |
|
We head to
KERSEFONTEIN GUEST FARM
near Hopefield for our first night’s
accommodation. The Farm is 18 km outside
of Hopefield and has been in the Melck
family since 1770. Our host tonight is
Julian Melck and we will meet in the
“Turn and Slip” pub for a pre-dinner
drink. This former bakery turned pub is
dedicated to Julian’s passion for flying
and very near the farm’s own landing
strip. We will have dinner tonight in
the Farm dining room. |
Tuesday
28th August |
|
After an early breakfast we need to be
on the road by 08h30 as we have over 300
km to travel to Nieuwoudtville. We do
so over the
Piekenierskloof pass where we
will stop for a light lunch; by-passing
Citrusdal; Clanwilliam; and Vanrynsdorp
before we arrive mid afternoon at our
accommodation for the next three nights
–
THE SWISS VILLA GUEST HOUSE
where Margie and Chris are slowly
becoming known as the “Hosts with the
Most” in the area. The gracious
sandstone home built in 1913 with a
beautiful garden, set amongst large
established trees, on a wide expanse of
lawn is where we will find spacious
rooms with comfortable beds, on a dinner
/ Bed and Breakfast basis. |
Wednesday
29th
August |
|
We start our day with a visit to
MATJIESFONTEIN
which is 13 km south of Nieuwoudtville.
We will
enjoy morning coffee in their unique
restaurant (formerly the school house).
Time permitting we will take a drive
around their fields of flowers. We need
to be at
PAPKUILSFONTEIN Farm
for lunch (their lamb pie is legendary
as are the desserts which Willem’s
daughter-in-law prepares for guests).
Our tour with Willem after lunch in 4x4
vehicles is one you will not easily
forget! |
Thursday 30th
August |
|
We start out after breakfast and make
our way to the waterfall outside of
Nieuwoudtville.
This year I am allowing some time to
view the flower exhibits in the Dutch
Reformed Church and the art exhibition
in the town. Lunch will be in the
village of Nieuwoudtville. We have a 2pm
tour booked at the
HANTAM BOTANICAL
GARDEN here Colleen will take
us into the flower fields on an old
Bedford Bus. This is a
tour-extraordinaire. Colleen’s knowledge
of the flowers is unbelievable and she
has a passion that she shares easily
with everyone!
Our tour should be over by 4pm at which
time we will head out of town for a
sun-downer at the
quiver tree forest
on the Loeriesfontein road.
This will be a fabulous way to wrap up
our time in Nieuwoudtville. Sleep again
at Swiss Villa and
remember our time in the fields with
fond memories. |
Friday 31st August |
After
breakfast we will head back to Cape
Town. A stop at the
Org du Rac
organic
wine farm
outside
Piketberg will put you in the mood for a
light lunch at the Roadstall, outside
Koringberg. We should be back in Cape
Town by mid-afternoon, and Hylton Ross
will be waiting with their shuttle
vehicles to transport you to your home. |
