WHALE
WATCHING TOUR
Walker Bay
16th - 18th September '11 |
|
Day 2: Saturday 17th September -
Destination Franskraal |
The group had breakfast at the
restaurant next to Whale Sanctuary and
were seated on the patio with a
spectacular view of the whole bay.
Gillie added some additional beauty to
the scene. |
|
|
Brian went for a walk just after 7am and
found four whales frolicking in the sea
just off the rocks. One was a calf,
hugging the side of its mother. Brian
sat on the rocks near the water and
watched them for 45 minutes. One whale
breached 3 times before they all moved
on. What a start to the day. |
|
|
Mid morning found us driving through to
Franskraal
and the
Strandtveld Museum where SD
Fourie lovingly told us many
stories of the area & the sinking of the
Birkenhead. It is marvelous that
SD and her husband Jan are so passionate
about the area and its history.
|
|
|
The
collection in the museum is part of what Jan
Fourie started many years ago when he was a
teacher at Gansbaai - it is hoped that this
collection stays 'in the family' - SD did tell
us they have a family trust and as her children
are teachers, they share the same passion. |
|
The
atmosphere outside the museum is so typical of
coastal towns in the Western Cape. Old
rowing boats add to the theme. We all took
a stroll along the beach to view the fynbos &
Spring Flowers - beautiful flowers and ladies! |
|
The Danger Point lighthouse is unfortunately
closed over the week end (when most people want
to visit!). We did however manage to look at the
view and take some photos. |
|
|
We made our way to
Gansbaai, stopping in at
Kleinbaai harbour to see the shark cage
diving boats. There was a group
disembarking from a whale watching boat
nearby. |
|
|
The Great White House presented the
opportunity for us to have a comfort
break, including coffee, beer etc.
|
|
|
|
Our lunch stop was in
Stanford where many of us grabbed a
sandwich before browsing the shops. |
