Day 1: Friday 16th September. Destination Hermanus

What a spectacular day to set out on our whale watching "extended week-end". The sky was clear and there was no possibility of rain (until Sunday?).

Wayne of Hylton Ross did the Southern Suburbs run this morning, collecting 7 passengers before meeting the Tableview Kombi (4 pax) at the airport holding bay. The passengers and luggage were transferred to the 15-seater and we were soon on our way to Hermanus, our first opportunity to see whales. A quick glance over the old harbour showed many whales were also out enjoying the day.

The hour stopover gave us an opportunity to have a light lunch and watch the activity in the bay. Dawn and Heather found homemade chicken pies which were "Absolutely delicious"

Leaving Hermanus we headed for De Kelders which would be our home for 2 nights. We had reserved the full use of Whale Waters Lodge for 7 people and Whale Sanctuary Lodge accommodated 5 of us.

Being right on the bay gave us an unrestricted view. The facilities were outstanding at both Whale Waters and Whale Sanctuary Lodge.

Four of us took a 'stroll' along the road to watch for the whales outside Whale Sanctuary Lodge - "Stroll" was all it was - we had been told Whale Sanctuary Lodge had fresh  chocolate cake and it didn't take much persuasion after our stroll to indulge.  In the evening we all gathered at Whale Waters Lodge for a pre-dinner drink.  What a perfect setting as the sun disappeared into the shimmering water - absolutely perfect!

Dinner tonight was at Thyme at Rosemary's in Gansbaai.  This restaurant receives regular praise for their food, and now we know why!  Rosemary and her staff make you feel so welcome - her food is excellent - and as we had the restaurant to ourselves, felt like we had our own private dinner party.
