SUTHERLAND & PRINCE ALBERT
12th -16th May '13 |
|
Day 1: Sunday 12th May. Destination
Sutherland |
We started our early morning pick-ups in
Tokai, Constantia, Tableview, Edgemead and the airport before
heading out on the N1 to Worcester,
for our first comfort break. |
|
|
We were fortunate to be allocated a brand
new vehicle for our tour, a Mercedes
17-seater Sprinter. |
|
|
Our lunch stop was at the Lord Milner Hotel in
Maitjiesfontein where we were treated to some
old time bar music and a short tour by the
resident pianist. |
|
We continued on to Sutherland and checked in to
Kambrokind Guest House, and Baroe self catering
for the night. |
|
When in Sutherland you have to do star
gazing. We had arranged a visit to
Sterland, Jurg & Rita Wagener's farm on
the outskirts of Sutherland. The
facility has 5 computerised telescopes
installed and could easily handle our
group. |
|
|
Whilst Jurg set up the telescopes, Rita and her
staff provided a typical Karoo dinner (Lamb and
vegetables) which was enjoyed by all. |
|
The meal complete, Jurg gave us a brief
introduction into stargazing and we donned our
scarves, beanies and jackets to venture out into
the cold air (5 degrees at 8pm). During the 2
hour presentation Jurg pointed out various
aspects of the night sky and adjusted the
telescopes for all to view the spectacle. The
temperature continued to drop and was hovering
around 1 degree when we returned to our warm
beds for the night. Fortunately we did not
experience the sub zero temperatures (winter). |
