SUTHERLAND & PRINCE ALBERT
12th -16th May '13

Day 3: Tuesday 14th May. Destination De Rust via Meiringspoort

The alternative route from Prince Albert to Oudtshoorn (other than the Swartberg Pass) is to travel via Meiringspoort, a scenic valley. Soaring cliff walls with spectacular rock formations line the 25 km tarred road which winds along the floor of the gorge, crossing the Groot River 25 times.

Our group was split today with Dawn & Elaine opting for the Swartberg Pass trip in the morning and then joining us at lunch time for the Meiringspoort trip. Breakfast was at the Prince Albert Country Store.

Dawn & Elaine's trip with John & his donkey wasn't without incident as the vehicle broke a fan belt (fortunately near town) and they had to return for another vehicle. All ended well though and they had a unique experience with excellent views and commentary.

We set out for De Rust just after 12 noon and experienced the majestic Meiringspoort en route, with a stop midway to view the waterfall. This required a short uphill walk to the source, but it was well worth it.

The waterfall and Carol's reason for not walking with us. You missed a great swimming opportunity.

Before lunch at the Village Trading Post and then time to "hit the shops"

Time for a beer and some retail therapy. Isabel finds a hat to suit her outfit.

We returned to prince Albert in time for us to put our feet up for an hour before embarking on a ghost walk through the town with Ailsa Tudhope, a professional storyteller. Dinner followed at the Gallery Cafe in the main road.
