WEST COAST ART - JACOBSBAAI
15th - 17th February
2011

Day 1

Seven budding artists set out from Cape Town on Tuesday 15th for a 3 day art session in the west coast town of Jacobsbaai. On hand to guide them was local artist Denis Hilton Lees.

The morning started off with a late breakfast at the Vyge Valley Farm Stall where the ladies tucked into their meals - Ruth and Lyn enjoy a joke and Gillie seems to want to 'dispose' of the huge basket of toast.

The houses in Jacobsbaai are very refreshing and the area exudes a 'peaceful' atmosphere.  Denis is an artist par excellence and his patience with us all had us looking forward to learning so much more from him in the future.  Mel looks very tense at the thought of having to draw her first picture! (But Denis explained that he DID have tracing paper available) - so all was not lost.

Then it was time to select an appropriate picture and transfer it onto the canvas.  The 2 'artists' amongst us - Dawn and Gillie preferred to hand sketch their art.

The first session was soon over and we could hardly believe what had been achieved in 3 hours.  Having had an acrylic wash the drawings were already coming to life.

Two self-catering houses were chosen - Die Seehuis and Whispering Whale and very soon everyone had unpacked and there was a short time to rest before the evening meal.

Sanet who runs Die Herberg joined us for a glass of wine and later Marilyn who runs her kitchen did a crayfish demonstration for us - from the cleaning to the preparation of the sauce (never mind the butter & garlic - all a 'necessary' addition)
