Our first stop was
Duncan's Roses.
The
roses are always
beautiful - but such a
pity that their gardens
were overgrown.
This we believe was due
to the fact that staff
had just returned from
their Christmas holiday
and were doing their
best to clear the
gardens of overgrowth! |
|
|
Two ladies with
beautiful hats meet in
the garden. Kottie from
New York, USA. & Jenny
with her injured arm
loved chatting.
Dawn calls the
photographer over -
"Come and smell this
rose! The perfume
is fantastic" |
|
|
Frank visiting Cape Town
had just come off the
Queen Mary 2 and was
grateful for the shade,
and enjoyed sitting,
chatting to Ann and
Joan. Seems lovely
hats are 'in vogue' in
summer and Trixie looked
lovely in hers! |

This is the Paul Cluver
Estate in Elgin, the
home of Fresh and Joan
Lancefield. |

|
The restaurant space is serene, built out of reeds and glass but with an
earthy open plan feel. It’s comfortable and rustic; a real garden
restaurant with loose stones on the floor. It’s summer and there are
roses creeping up the trellises and purple artichoke flowers as well as
orchids on the tables. Some of the large communal tables were made by Dr
Cluver, out of some of the alien trees on the farm. (As published on
www.capetownmagazine.com). |

We were taken on a herb
garden tour by Joan from
the FRESH restaurant.
Vegetables are grown
specifically for the
table in this garden,
and together with help,
Joan is slowly planting
just what she needs in
her restaurant. |
|
|
Joan picked Fennel and
the flowers were passed
around - "Come Margot
see how much this tastes
like liquorice" says
Theresa. |
|
|
The restaurant is a
large open airy space
and with the help of
large fans made everyone
comfortable despite the
heat outside. In
the photo on the RHS,
Sandy, Cynthia and Erika
are intently listening
to a story told by
someone opposite them. |
|
|
Joy seems to be saying
"Oh dear here is the
photographer again -
better smile".
Starters were a choice
of either palma ham with
melon OR a fresh pear
salad served with
gorgonzola cheese.
Decadent and delicious.
Main course was
chicken cacciatore
served on homemade
pasta. Of course, Joan
also offered delicious
homemade bread with
table salads - so no-one
went hungry. |
|
|
Joan Lancefield also
makes the picnic baskets
for the
Paul Cluver Forest
Amphitheatre Experience,
which can be booked on
top of your show ticket.
Picnic baskets include a
Greek salad, humus,
smoked snoek pate, a
lentil salad, potato
vinaigrette, French
baguette, cold meats,
mustard, fresh fruit, a
chocolate brownie as
well as crackers and
cheese. |
Happy people and empty plates are signs that the food and ambience were
great |
