Bo Kaap Kombuis

The Bo Kaap Kombuis is situated in what must be very valuable property near the city centre of Cape Town.  There are stunning views of Table Mountain and the city below.  It is here that Nazli and Yusuf have built a stunning restaurant which offers traditional Malay cuisine.

Two different views of Lions Head. The first from the coach as we drove from Constantia along the coastal road and the second from the Bo Kaap Kombuis restaurant on our arrival.

Nazli is such a warm lady - instantly mading us all feel  at ease.  She had her samosa wraps with the fillings ready to show us 'how'.  After lunch it was terrific to chat to her - heart-to-heart - about all things like their Ramadan celebrations; how excited the little children are when this comes around; fasting; and life as a busy restaurateur!

Intense concentration followed - "you have to hold your hand 'just so' in order to make a 'pocket' into which you can put your filling".

This is the third lesson that Annette has attended and she felt somehow an old hat at it.  It took Sally all her concentration to master the trick - however, once you 'get it',  folding samosas is really easy.

Yusuf was on hand at the bar waiting with his mini fryer to cook our samosas.  He is such a happy person and whilst we stood waiting, he was offering valuable tips on what to put into the samosas, even some of them that looked like the filling was oozing out, posed no problem for Yusuf to cook!  I must say when you see your finished product on a plate it looked quite professional!

The Malay buffet table groaned with food after our samosa lesson.  There was chicken breyani; a smoorsnoek dish; typical breyani rice; various salads - pity you just could not do justice to all the food.  After lunch Yusuf who is a historian enchanted us on how life is in the Bo Kaap.  The one thing that struck true to me was what he said "If my wife is cooking a curry and the delicious smell wafts over to my neighbour's home, I cannot rest if I know they do not have food - we HAVE to take some over for them"  Pity we all don't heed these thoughts!  This is neighbourly love at its very best.

Samosas (Potato Stuffed Pastry) are perhaps the most popular vegetarian (usually) Indian appetizer, street food, tiffin (light lunch) in not only India but throughout whole Indian subcontinent and throughout the world.
