Institute for the Blind
Worcester

Our visit to the Institute for the Blind in Worcester has left an indelible mark on the lives of those who came on the tour.  The people who live and work there are amazing despite their disabilities.  Above this man communicates by placing his thumb on the lips of one of our ladies and as you can see his hand below her ear - picking up the vibrations.

The Blind Spot Theatre is a unique disabled friendly reception, training and entertainment venue where guests can relax and enjoy refreshments while delighting in live entertainment. This was our meeting point today where a cup of coffee/tea and delicious rusks were waiting for us.

Ledivia orgainised a tour of the facilities; she has such a warm personality working with her friends at the Institute in such a caring way.  We watched a short DVD about the Institute, then first stop was the Eddie van Dijk Exhibition Centre, where a large number of geological specimens are displayed in a tactile exhibition forming part in the education of blind people with braille added at each exhibit.

A new I-pad is a fabulous way to keep updated with the day.  The George van Heerden Fossil Trail is another exciting way they use to add interest to the day of the blind!  They will shortly have a roof over this area which will add a new dimension to the Fossil Trail.

Everyone was gathered around Ledivia here where she is explaining the difference between the size of a man and woman's brain - based on the size of their skulls.  Many interesting comments followed. (Brian was told to "Take a hike back to Cape Town" after his comments! Amazing cane work is done by the men in the workshop. They even repair items.

The ladies were all so interested to watch this man communicating with Di.  Amazing principle for a deaf/blind person.  This is a very unique way and not many people world wide can communicate like this.

The start of a new cane product diligently made in the workshop.  Theresa finds that to communicate with this good looking man one need write the words on his hand - he has such an appealing nature - the ladies all fell for him!

What an interesting time was spent walking around the workshop with the ladies all stopping to chat and enquire more about what everyone was doing.

They have an amazing band which entertained us over a lunch of lasagna, fresh home baked bread and salad. So good was their band that a few of the ladies could not resist and got up to dance!

We were delighted to celebrate Margot's special birthday with her and she was overcome with emotion at the thought of the kindness shown to her with the gift voucher she can use to spoil herself.  She deserves it - what an amazing lady!

It was such a special time for us all - very humbling and we met such fabulous people.  When we arrived their manager was introduced to us.  He has worked there for 9 years and said "You will leave here feeling different today" and WOW was he correct.  They touched our hearts in a way that we will forever remember -  The Institute for the Blind in Worcester, what a special place!
