MIDLANDS
MEANDER 11th
to 16th April 2010
Day 3: Tuesday 13th
DAY 3:Explore the
Nottingham Road area. Candice of Granny Mouse got us together
for a group photo for the Midlands
Newsletter, before we headed for
MichaelhousewhereMoira Rowney met
us and told us all about this very exclusive
boys school.
An
aerial photo of the school shows the extent of
the facilities. The group waiting for the
tour to begin.
The
chapel designed by Herbert Baker was the first
stop - the stained glass mural depicts the birds
found in the area. Difficult to see unless
someone points this out to you! Moira proved to be well versed on all aspects of
the school. She normally takes prospective
pupils and parents on a "walk-about". Our
group was the first to visit since she took over
the marketing for the school.
The Schlesinger theatre and the lady who
directs performances was yet another
treat. This theatre was funded by
an old boy. They have school assembly in
the theatre, and have hosted several
successful performances. We were told
all about these shows and seemingly,
when the local girls' school is invited
to partake in shows, this proves to be
an added bonus for the boys! The
canteen on the premises and the menu for
lunch had everyone's mouth watering!
By far the best school canteen menu we
have seen!
Rosewood Embroidery
had the ladies reaching for their credit
cards once again!
Their work is fantastic - and perfect
for a gift to take home to someone
special!
Piggly Wiggly Deli
over the road provided us all with a
chance to refresh and enjoy lunch.
This open beef, camembert cheese
sandwich was Brian's choice! Wow such
lovely presentation he said! They
grow Maize in Natal and have even
started a Maze at Piggly Wiggly.
Perhaps next time we should go to the
Midlands in winter as the mid 30's
temperature found us all too lazy to
explore it!
Culamoya Chimes -
unfortunately our visit here had to be
cancelled due to the size of our coach! When
we phoned in the morning they said - No
Problem! But when the owners drove
past Piggly
Wiggly and saw the size of
our coach they phoned us to say - NO GO!!
We then chose to go to
Spiral Blue
which held many fabulous finds, especially
the bracelets which Heather
managed to sort for herself.
Ugly
Ducklingover the road from Granny
Mouse also proved a good stop. "Hey
ladies space yourselves - today is only Day
Three!" The money will be finished
before the shopping.
Yellowood Cafe
was an excellent
dinner venue - Sandy
gave us the history of this national
monument which houses the restaurant.
There is a wonderful daytime view of Howick
Falls - next time we tour the Midlands we
will have lunch here to appreciate the view!
Angela
of the
Midlands Tourism
Office
joined us for dinner - She has been an
absolute pillar of strength to us in
planning this tour. Just wish the
other Tourism offices in our country
would offer the same service and be as
efficient as she is!. Susan made friends with the restaurant cat
and even offered it the remainder of her
Crème brûlée.
Wonder what her dog back home will have
to say about this! We have sent him
the photo's!
"Everyone has a photographic
memory, some just don’t have film."
