UP THE WEST COAST TO SEE THE SPRING FLOWERS

The West Coast National Park on a Cold & Wet Day in September.
Spring has been slow this year in coming to the Western Cape. We've had a lot of rain and grey days!

The day we chose to view the Spring Flowers turned out to be no exception – we woke to a “Grey Day Supreme” and headed up the West Coast with fine drizzle all the way…………
In fact as we headed into the West Coast National Park this is what Danie, our coach driver was faced with.
What we did enjoy was the game viewing – plenty of ostriches, and Danie was pretty knowledgeable about all the buck species that were available in this lush beautiful park.
We took the coach down to the Beach – to try to see a whale or two – but even the sea was too rough for the whales!

We did a bit of game viewing and then because of the cold, everyone on the coach was starting to feel very hungry.

Geelbek Restaurant was where we chose to have lunch – and I know many of the ladies felt even colder when we were told to settle for lunch in the function marquee.

The Restaurant Staff quickly ‘came to the party’, and provided a gas heater and wrapped blankets around some of us………….definitely a ‘day with a difference’

Something of great interest to us all was the ‘Rollende Hotel’ which is a vehicle where overseas visitors travel “Over Africa” – carrying their own accommodation with them – very clever – provided you get on well with everyone on the vehicle.

Here Carol and Elizabeth are ‘bird watching.’
The little weaver birds still very actively making their nests.
Ava warm and cosy, waiting for lunch

On the way back to the coach we got caught in very hard rain resulting in some of us feeling cold all the way back to the City.

In conclusion, there were Spring Flowers in the West Coast National Park, and had the sun shone, we would have had a spectacular display – BUT life sometimes throws curved balls at you and having experienced less than 10 outings with rain (out of 147 in 8 years), we are doing very well!
What upset me more was that the two days following our trip were cloudless!
