KNYSNA 2012
16th -20th October 12 |
|
Day 2: Wednesday 17th October: An early
morning look at our surroundings. |
We took a leisurely walk around our
"neighborhood" before breakfast
and took in the sights and sounds of this
spectacular environment. What a great place
to live and raise a family. |
|
|
Breakfast was arranged for 9am at
Mon Petit
Pain in Grey Street. What a special place
this is. The service is prompt and the meals
delicious. |
|
|
Six of us decided to do the
"Featherbed"
cruise today and on our
arrival at the waterfront we were told
that the tour was dependent on arrival
of the only other tour party, a group of
German exchange students. While we
waited we inspected the vessel we thought
would be used (left), but alas due to
lower numbers, we were ultimately
directed to the Spirit of Knysna -Rivercat
(right). |
|
|
Since
the kitchen on Featherbed was closed (only
serving fish & chips to the students on
arrival), we ordered toasted sandwiches from the
restaurant at the departure point, to have on
the boat. |
|
On arrival at Featherbed Nature
Reserve on the
western head, our party investigated our
surroundings, looked at the Blue Duikers and
found a massive tortoise whilst waiting for the
students to complete their lunch. |
|
We were soon all loaded on to the vehicle which
was to drive us through the nature reserve and to
the top of the heads. What spectacular views we
encountered during the 20 minute drive. |
|
|
Our arrival
at the top required that we take a
decision regarding the return journey.
(Walk down - 2.2km or stay on the
vehicle and return to Featherbed ) Three
of us decided we would venture the walk. |
|
The
"before the walk
down" photo. We all look
relaxed and fresh with 2.2 km to go!
|
|
|
|
Elaine & Carol negotiating some rocky steps into
the forest which soon gave way to a gravel path. |
|
|
The forest
was cool, opening onto views of the sea
crashing against the rocks. Where the
descent
was steep, steps were built with local
rocks. The "walking sticks" were a great
help. |
|
|
With 1km to
go we came across this sign which
directed walkers to caves below. Not for
the unfit! |
|
|
No, we didn't venture into the cave, but
with the aid of Google we were able to
look at the view from inside the cave!
The waves continued to break close to
the path (fortunately the tide was low!).
We soon noticed that the continuous
spray was not from the sea, but from a
light rain which had started. |
|
|
The path soon flattened out and we could
sense that the "end was near". When we
could see the bricked foot path into the
restaurant area, our feet seemed to
dance with excitement. |
|
The end of
our 2.2km walk. (This is "the after"
photo). Doesn't sound a long
way? It actually isn't; It would be more
difficult if you were walking up instead
of down. Always good to add a bit of
exercise into the day. Well done! |
|
|
|
Dinner
tonight was at the Bell
Tavern in Belvidere Manor. This might
be the smallest pub in Knysna but they offer
excellent meals. |
