JOURNEY TO FREEDOM - FULL
DAY |
|
Come and share with us this story of
sacrifice and suffering of those who
believed so strongly in the fight for
freedom and democracy they were prepared
to pay for it with their lives! We delve
into the past by visiting the Hector
Pieterson museum in Soweto where we
discover why we pay tribute to this 12
year old. The violent rioting, the pain
and suffering, are captured in the
visuals of the tumultuous struggle of
repressed people.
We have the option to visit the matchbox
Mandela House museum (own account) to
see where Nelson Mandela family spent
his early days before his incarceration.
We include a visit to the Regina Mundi
Church to find out how it played a
pivotal role in the resistance to
apartheid when it was used to host
secret meetings of the banned political
parties. This was the place of sanctuary
to which students fled to dodge bullets
fired on them by police during protest
action. The walls of this church have
witnessed so much of the history of
South Africa and its transition to
democracy, including the hearings of the
Truth and Reconciliation Commission
presided over by Archbishop Desmond Tutu
from 1995 to 1998.
We stop for lunch (own account) at a
local Soweto restaurant, and then
continue our tour at the Apartheid
Museum. This is no ordinary museum! It
is the beginning of a journey to the
birth of democracy. You can feel the
tension as you loose yourself in the
horror of what took place during this
terrifying era. The incredible
multimedia experience captures the
atmosphere of a dark past. Just when you
are almost overwhelmed by the shocking
events it starts to dawn on you that out
of such adversity a new nation was born
bringing with it triumphant hope for the
future. |
