JOHANNESBURG CITY TOUR - HALF
DAY |
|
A city tour is a great way to orientate
yourself and pick out what interests you
personally so you can return to spend
more time there (if you are fortunate
enough to have more time)! It’s also a
great way to gain an overall feel of a
city. You will not be disappointed with
the ‘City of Gold’!
In 1886 gold was discovered and people
from all over the world converged on the
area. Today Johannesburg is South
Africa’s largest city and it has not
lost any of the excitement of the past.
It remains the financial and commercial
centre of the country where you will
witness the ‘Rainbow Nation’ in action.
Our tour visits Constitution Hill to see
the impressive architecture of the
Constitutional Court. We visit
Johannesburg’s Old Fort Prison (closed
on Sundays) which played an important
role in the countries radical politics
and the struggle for freedom.
Our tour continues onto Melville with
its Bohemian 7th Avenue dotted with
vibey cafés and quaint book shops, and
then onto Newtown, to the Johannesburg
Market Theatre and Museum Africa,
Johannesburg’s fascinating cultural
history museum. Admire the beautiful
architecture of the exterior and then
loose yourself in the 1950’2 shebeen
ambiance of the interior.
We return via Houghton which offers
great contrast to what we have already
seen. The lavish homes of this leafy
suburb were built to impress and are
evidence that great wealth still exists
in this area. Many famous people
including Nelson Mandela reside here and
emerging entrepreneurs aspire to being
able to call it home. |
