STELLENBOSCH FRESH GOODS MARKET
Saturday 17th January '09 |
|
The Stellenbosch Fresh Goods market is an
authentic
Slow Food market consisting of
producers selling products they have
sourced, grown, raised, harvested, caught,
preserved or transformed themselves. The
market place is located on the Dorpstreet
square in
Bosman's Crossing.
It
conveniently brings together a variety of fine foods and
wines. The food is fresh seasonal and
locally grown making it simple, nourishing
and delicious. |
|
|
On arrival breakfast was the first requirement, which ranged
from homemade spinach and feta quiches
to Cornish pasties.
Then the shopping started in all
earnest. What to buy first?–
fortunately with this market many of the
stall holders allow you to ‘taste before
you buy’. |
|
Heather just could not decide which cup cake
her son would enjoy! Pity this stall
would not let you sample them before
buying. Soon the ladies found it
necessary to stop awhile some with
coffee – some with a glass of wine. |
|
|
Ute Krueger who came along for the first time,
enjoyed taking some time out to herself with a
glass of wine.
Not only is there plenty of food to taste and
purchase, but one can have your feet massaged –
extremely relaxing. |
|
What about a delicious cake for afternoon tea? Or
fresh flowers to decorate your home? |
|
|
|
All too soon the ladies were ‘shopped out’ and it was time
to head back to the coach – even if it was just to store all the shopping bags. |
|
|
The Anura Vineyards outside of Stellenbosch
was our next “Port of Call”. JP, our coach
driver had phoned ahead and they had set up a
cheese/wine tasting for us.
Serious stuff this is – to decide which wine to
taste.
A superbly decorated cheese platter coupled with
several wines added something to our day.
Afterwards their cash tills performed overtime
as we stocked up on their fabulous cheese and
wine. |
|
Some of us were really thirsty after all
the shopping!
|
|
|
Then we did something most of us don't often do today! –
enjoy an ice cream! In the centre of
Stellenbosch is an ice cream shop par
excellence and what a superb way to end
our day.
Gillie found the time
between eating her ice cream to purchase
a super pair of ear rings. We all
envied her – choice superb!
En route back to the city we stopped in
at Aspidistra nursery –
lovely to wander around aimlessly
admiring nature. |
What a lovely day spent
together –
“Friends are the most
important ingredient in this recipe of
life."
