HOW
DOES IT WORK?
Visitors buy a ticket for a route ; 7 routes in
total. You travel to 3 different homes in
Darling & experience a truly South African
experience! You might go to one of Darling’s
grand Cape Dutch homes or to one of the informal
abodes - this is all part of the fun. You travel
to these shows in the local taxis and the
atmosphere is electric!
Our group arrived in time to see the start of
the parade. It was interesting that local
business in Darling all take part in this parade
(including a few moms who put their babies in
strollers and joined the procession!) In case
you’re wondering who Carol is photographed
with??? There were a group of varsity students
who, for fun, dressed up with wigs and bikinis.
Carol asked to photograph him and he willingly
obliged, but wanted Carol in the picture. Coke
cans et al in his bikini top—a bit of Fun!!
By 12h00 everyone lines up according to a set
‘colour’ and you get taken to 3 performances in
the local taxis. Our first performance
was by
Pieter Bosch Botha
(comedian)
whose show “Fully Committed” had us all
enthralled. The next performance was
Ottoman Slap
who made a name
for themselves at the recent “Rocking the
Daisies” concert. They are a Middle Eastern
Gypsy Fusion Band and their belly dancer stole
the show! Our last performance was
Zanne Stapelberg
who had
Philippus Hugo
accompany her and their performance (opera) was
very moving! She has won the Standard Bank Young
Artists Award and has performed with artists
like Lady Smith Black Mambazo,
Mandoza, Karen Zoid and Elvis Blue. One of the
ladies in our party insisted on giving Zanne a
hug which was much appreciated!
There was enough time to get something to eat
and drink before we returned to Cape Town just
after 3.30pm. A thoroughly enjoyable day spent
in Darling.
