SUTHERLAND
2009
21st
to 24th July '09
Days 1 & 2 |
|
July 2009 found
us once again on the road to Sutherland,
this time with a group of 13, two of whom
were with us last year as well.
(Do they like the
cold? - or do they come back for the
company?). Brian opted out of
this trip, having recently spent 9 days with
me in Namibia. |

Joanne
and Leigh settled into the coach and
caught up on some "cell phone contact".
Matjiesfontein was our first stop.
Johan, our coach driver decided to
see whether he would enjoy working for the
Matjiesfontein Transport Company! We had a pub
lunch in the Lord Milner Hotel,
complete with piano player. |
|
The
group is always keen to 'pose' for a group
photo. Here Alice is trying to thumb a
lift on the Shosholoza Meyl train en
route to Beaufort West. The other ladies
decided to catch up with a good old chat on the
platform. It was then on to the coach again for
our final 110km drive to Sutherland where we
checked into our respective Guest Houses. |

|
Our delicious dinner was lovingly
served by Anelia, Johann and staff
of Cluster d'Hote. Ian and
Aiza were singled out to share
the two-seater - after all they were the
only married couple on tour.
What a very special restaurant this is.
Trish and Maureen show
their appreciation. |

Next morning Dave O'Hearn
boarded our coach and took us on an
awesome visit to SALT.
He made the 'place come alive' -
asking for questions and we had a good
laugh about 'the difference between
astronomy' and 'astrology'. Who
asked the question?! |
|
|
|
Here we all wait to go up the stairs to the
actual SALT telescope for a "Site Visit".
In the afternoon we did a Museum tour with
Jannie
Du Plessis the most gentle man many
of us have met. Having lived in
Sutherland for many years, he is on the
museum committee and works for the local
church. As can be seen from the above
photo the cold wind started to blow - but
everyone was well prepared and Ian decided
Joanne needed a cuddle as she
had left her jacket at the guest house. |
|
That night saw us up at the SALT
visitors centre to view the night
stars. They open the roof and set up
their large telescopes - boy was it cold!
Unfortunately the clouds rolled in - our
bottle of sherry was finished - and our legs
frozen, so it was decided to 'call it a
night' and close the roof. |
|
Dinner was at Pearlman House
(definitely not as good as Cluster
D'Hote!). After a warm drink, Yvonne,
Joanne and Aiza 'toasted life"
and the fact that we were now called the
BEANIE BABES FROM CAPE TOWN.
Sybil, Carol and Alice
kept their coats on for quite a while in
the pub before dinner. This cold
weather chills you right through all the
layers of clothing - takes ages to warm
up! |
