June is always a cold, wet and rainy month in Cape Town and this month was no exception. To begin we had two options for the day – OPTION 1 was to go to a lavender farm & OPTION 2 was to visit the Mosaic Studio at Spier.
We never got to go to the lavender farm, as rains the previous day made the access road to the farm difficult to negotiate. So, we visited Zetler’s Deli; Food; Wine Shop deluxe. The ‘gathering’ began and 2 of the ladies even found lovely tote bags ideal for their next overseas travel! Others loaded up on biscuits; Darling Sweets; and a veritable host of other food items that shouted at them to “Buy Me”!
After this we headed the short distance to the Spier Wine Estate! The group had several options to do on the Spier farm – visit the Mosaic & Beading Centre which, with Marshall taking our group around, was a fabulous experience. What an ambassador Marshall is for the centre – we watched a lady do a beading portrait; and Marshall even gave us a demonstration on how they cut and measure up the mosaics for the commissioned work! A fabulous experience for those who joined in this group.
Some went wine tasting; a few went for a coffee; and yet others found the singing rocks which are equally fascinating! These rocks, which are mounted on pedestals have a fascinating effect when you move your hands up and down over them. Some of our group seemed to have more electro-magnetic abilities than others – but fun, nevertheless.
A few went Wine tasting and enjoyed the experience in the new tasting room at Spier!
Then it was off to Barrique Restaurant on the Vredenheim Estate – this restaurant is run very ably by Simone who has been helping her mom and dad in the restaurant with front-of-house! We could choose between Italian Parmegiano (with bacon, olives, pesto and mozzarella); Battered Hake with chips and salad; Glazed Pork Belly with mash and veggies; spinach cannelloni – spinach and ricotta in a creamy mushroom sauce. This was followed by a Crème Brulee; Chocolate mudcake; or a Dom Pedro.
All in all, a tantalising menu which was enjoyed in their semi-private room (just for our group) with fabulous fresh flower arrangements on the tables! Everyone enjoyed Barrique – from their staff who were ever so pleasant, to the warm, cosy room we enjoyed our lunch in, it is a restaurant that is worthy of going back to again and again!
