Wonderful to have an almost full 32-seater coach heading up the R27 to !KHWA TTU –
“The San, the first people to inhabit Southern Africa, represent a 100,000-year-old culture which should be considered one of the world’s treasures” – Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu
On arrival at Khwa Ttu we were met by Neshada, who greeted us all in her mother tongue and then took us for a walk through their herb and plant garden – pointing out how beneficial all these plants we take for granted to heal our bodies! They provided their wellness tea halfway through our walk – in a lovely ‘boma’ type area. Some of the group found the tea bitter but they had their own honey to sweeten the tea to your taste!
San and other indigenous people have always understood the plants around them were so much more than simply pretty flowers or a tasty snack.
12,000 years ago we were all hunter-gatherers. Re-discover some of the powerful knowledge you have lost – what to use to win a wife, or heal a wound, or keep you alive on the long journey ahead.
If lucky, you may also meet our chickens and hear one of their stories in |Xung.
Neshada gave us a ‘quick’ lesson on the pronunciation of the click symbols for the San languages – very interesting to hear our ‘version’ of the clicking sounds!
We then went for a walk through their nursery learning even more about the plants they sell! What a fabulous introduction to Khwa Ttu. After this some browsed their shop ; or enjoyed the selection of wonderful coffee table books ; or indeed, watched a video in comfort on their couches.
We went in for lunch at just after 12h00 – lunch was different – very tasty – the most favourite choice being the slow braised Venison served with Root Vegetables and Carrot top pesto.

After lunch many chose to go down to the museum –
thanks to Angela for her fabulous report
“The two museum displays are so impressive – artwork in the style of the San was encouraging in that the young artists depicting their culture
in a contemporary manner have put brush to pallet and come out with work special.
The thought put into the display and montage is to be hugely commended.
The videoscope in Exhibition 3 – The Way of the San – was amazing …
The whole experience was an eye-opener.”
All in all – a day with a difference – very enjoyable Time Out up the R27
