January 2016 has begun with great enthusiasm to get out-and-about and on-the-road again. A full coach with 42 on board! There was a fabulous air of anticipation amongst everyone.
Paternoster is always a favorite place to go to…….road works along the R27 delayed us by at about 40 minutes. Our lunch time was changed with Gelukkie – from arriving at 12h30 to only getting there by 13h00. This allowed everyone time to browse the shops ; sit at the Paternoster Hotel for an ice cold beer ; or take a walk on the beach.
By 12h45 everyone was quite happy to board the coach again and head out to Gelukkie Farm situated just outside of town. This function venue whose motto is “Gelukkie is not just a place – it’s an experience” certainly lives up to its reputation.
A warm welcome from Cindy with her beautiful, smiling face and very soon everyone found a comfortable spot in the garden or in the dining are, where 2 long tables had been set for lunch. An open bar meant that everyone could get themselves a drink and relax.
Gelukkie specializes in Fire Food – your meal is cooked right in front of you. The idea is to stand / sit and watch them preparing lunch. The menu comprised: Chicken/Mussel paella OR Portuguese Chicken/Chorizo paella OR the cherry on the top for many was the Grilled Crayfish.
Ruth and Andrew started the cooking and lovely smells permeated the air.
Some ladies enjoyed the ‘day-bed’ and had their own Time Out. The three sisters – Ann, Hilda and Flo taking full advantage of this!
When everyone was called to table at 14h00 there was an air of silence. With us all having left Cape Town early morning with not having breakfast, the food was welcomed. Pity that with us being seasoned South Africans, many have fond memories of the ‘large’ crayfish we used to enjoy!! The size of crayfish today would have been illegal years ago!! The cherry on the top was two decadent meringue/berry ice creams which arrived beautifully decorated! Everyone tucked in and even found space for a second helpings!
Back on the road again we found the road works still operational which resulted in Tableview being dropped off at 17h30 and Constantia an hour later.
A long day out in the country – but judging by everyone’s mood – A very worthwhile day!
