Time Out in Durbanville Thursday 25th October 2018
Cape Town has been experiencing extreme temperatures – on Thursday is was predicted to be 35+ and a bit more inland in Durbanville. Sizzling – but ladies came prepared – sun hats, water and light clothing! However, our first stop at the Durbanville Rose Garden proved to be a bit of a disaster……. Complaints about the Heat and the Roses! The Western Cape has, as everyone knows, experienced an extreme drought and this was very evident in the roses!
Sadly, because roses need lots of water to survive, and they obviously didn’t get this in the critical stage after pruning, the roses are not at their best.
A decision was made to head into Durbanville to a cooler place to get something cold to drink. We went to Chocolate (Used to be called Our Place) and very soon everyone felt a tad better. Conversation and laughter flowed, and everyone seemed happier.
A few went shopping and at 12.00 we all boarded the coach again and headed to Evertsdal Opstal our venue for lunch.
It was lovely to have Maureen’s niece, also called Maureen with us from Australia. Lovely to meet you, Maureen.
The Evertsdal Opstal building has significant history attached to it, but possibly the best thing about this building is that the walls were built so very ‘wide’ which, obviously keeps the inside a ‘bit’ cooler. We were all seated in their sysaal at one table which made for a ‘gesellige’ (good conversation) time!
Lunch was grilled chicken fillets with onion rings and vegetables! A ‘groot bord kos’ – huge plate of food – many ‘doggy bags went home’! Dessert was a lemon-based cheesecake which had a refreshing taste.
We left the restaurant by about 14:45 and headed back to Tableview via the Durbanville Wine Route – always a nice road to drive – lovely wine estates on a windy road!
Life is really good when surrounded by friends, good food and somehow at the end of the day we didn’t even complain about the Hot Day!
